I do not like talk radio. It brings out the worst critical attitudes in people. Everyone has something bad to say about someone or something. I find the whole thing to be debilitating.
And worst of all, that attitude sometimes infiltrates the Church. It seems as if some authors and speakers find it difficult to say anything positive without first tearing something down. We would do well to attend to James’ admonition.
“Don't speak evil against each other, my dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize each other and condemn each other, then you are criticizing and condemning God's law.” (James 4:11)
In his book My Larger Education, Booker T. Washington, reported an experience that illustrates my point.
“After great sacrifice and effort, a coloured minister in the South had constructed a building to be used for the purpose of sheltering orphans and aged coloured women. After this minister had succeeded in getting his building constructed and paid for, a young coloured man came to inspect it and at once began pointing out the defects in the building. The minister listened patiently for some time and then, turning to the young man, he said: ‘My friend, you have an advantage over me.’ Then he paused and looked at the young man, and the young man looked inquiringly at the minister, who continued: ‘I am not able to find fault with any building which you have constructed.’” (Booker T Washington, My Larger Education, p. 43)
Let’s build what God has called us to build and stop criticizing other people’s buildings.
