Creators: From Chaucer and Durer to Picasso and Disney

Paul Johnson is my favorite author. His newest book, Creators: From Chaucer and Durer to Picasso and Disney, is one of his best. Creators is a compilation of 13 essays on men and woman of outstanding originality from the past sixth centuries. Johnson’s premise is summarized in this statement from page one.

“Creativity is inherent in all of us. We are the progeny of an Almighty God, and God is a creator. In creating us, He made us in His own image. So we are, by our nature, creators.”

His essay on Bach inspired me to see what happens when a passion for God combines with an unwavering commitment to excellence. His essay on Picasso was an insightful examination of one of the most influential people of the 20th century. Those two essays alone were worth the price of the book.

Creators is not for everyone. But for those who love the stories of men and women who have shaped history, I would highly recommend it.

7 Practices of Effective Ministry

Occasionally I come across a book that states simply and elegantly everything I have been thinking for a while. Andy Stanley’s book, 7 Practices of Effective Ministry, fits that description to a tee. It's the most important book I've read in years. Each practice is simple, well stated, and life changing.

I recommend 7 Practices to anyone who wants to be more strategic in ministry. You can listen to the podcast of the authors discussing the seven practices at www.practicallyspeaking.org.
